About Tanzeel Naveed Khan, Forward Deployed Engineer, Full Stack Developer and AI Engineer.
Tanzeel Naveed Khan is a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE): a full stack and AI engineer who embeds directly with a client’s team, learns the workflow first hand, and ships production systems with Next.js, TypeScript, Python and OpenAI or Claude agents.
I am Tanzeel Naveed Khan, a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE). That means a full stack developer and AI engineer who works embedded with the team he is building for. I am based in Karachi, Pakistan, and I work remotely with teams in the UK, the US, the UAE, Mexico and Pakistan. Most of what I do falls into two buckets: shipping full stack products end to end, and putting language models to work inside them so they handle things a person would otherwise do by hand.
A Forward Deployed Engineer sits inside the customer’s problem instead of behind a ticket queue: joining their team, watching how the work is really done, then building, deploying and iterating on the system in their environment until it holds up in production. That is the difference between a contractor and an FDE, and it is why the engagements here tend to start with a week of watching rather than a week of estimating. Every project on this site was built that way: close to the people whose problem it was, in the environment it had to run in.
The AI half of that is where I spend most of my time now. There is a wide gap between calling a model and building something you can hand a workflow to and walk away from. Closing that gap is mostly unglamorous work: deciding which tools an agent is allowed to call, keeping durable state outside the conversation so a truncated context cannot lose it, logging every call so a bad answer can be traced, and agreeing up front on what the agent hands to a human instead of guessing.
That habit came from the product side rather than from AI. A support bot that answers eight questions well and passes two on cleanly is worth more than one that attempts all ten. The same is true of a checkout, a booking flow or an internal dashboard. What matters is how the thing behaves on the day something is wrong, and that is the part that gets designed last, if at all.
Before any of that I was writing ordinary web software, and I still am. Next.js and TypeScript on the front, Node or Python behind it, Postgres or Mongo underneath, Stripe when money is involved. The AI work sits on top of that foundation rather than replacing it, which is why it tends to survive contact with real traffic.
What Forward Deployed Engineer means here
Embedded, not at arm’s length
I work inside your team, your repo and your tooling for the length of the engagement, in your standups and your channels, not behind a ticket queue with a weekly status call.
One person, whole distance
Discovery, architecture, implementation, deployment and the iteration afterwards are the same person’s job. Nothing is lost in the handoff between whoever understood the problem and whoever wrote the code.
Production is the finish line
A forward deployed engagement is judged on the system running against real users and real data, with logging, failure paths and a documented handover. Not on a demo that worked once.
How I tend to work
- Deploy forward before designing. I want to sit with the people doing the work and see the actual problem before I propose a stack. Half the briefs I get describe a solution someone already picked, and the underlying problem is usually smaller and different.
- Ship something narrow and real early, then widen it. A working slice running in your environment tells you more in a week than a specification tells you in a month.
- Automate the boring path first and leave the exceptions to a person. That is where the return is, and it is the part that fails safely.
- Stay on it after launch. The forward deployed part of the job is the weeks after the demo, when real users find the paths nobody scoped.
- Write down why, not just what. Six months later the reason a thing is built the way it is matters more than the code.
